Madeleine Accalia’s White Girls is stunning: clever, nuanced, moving from social comedy to anger, naïveté to embarrassment…not a word is wasted, not an emotion or observation false.
Libby Purves, TheatreCat on ‘White Girls’
Aided massively by Accalia’s poem-like script, filled to the brim with powerful images and striking nuances, the play does well to offer insights that feel like the beginning of a conversation, as opposed to attempting to be the final word on any matter; it’s surprisingly refreshing to have a production effectively say, “I’m not sure – what do you think?”
A Younger Theatre on ‘The Sublet Next to Heaven’
Madeleine is more than a talented writer, she’s a clever one. I’m constantly impressed when I listen to and read her poetry, mostly because of how well she manages to capture the anxiety and calm of the every day—all whilst making it seem extraordinary. There’s a quiet joy in the way she tells stories in her poems, a real spark of something ironic and aware, but still very funny.
